HONG KONG – Hong Kong Customs and Excise officers yesterday opened a raid on a small shop selling Viagra, a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, for more than $3,500.
The raid was carried out in the area of Tong Yuejin District and Heng Long Road in the north. The raid followed a shipment of Viagra in a package valued at more than $2,500.
It was discovered that the package was valued at more than $3,500 and was sent to a local pharmacy in Heng Long Road, Heng Long District, on Friday.
“It is very dangerous and illegal to get Viagra if you are buying or selling drugs such as alcohol or tobacco in a store,” said Customs and Excise Director-General Michael Lough, adding that the drugs were being sold to the public in Hong Kong.
The drugs were purchased in the pharmacy at the Heng Long Road and Tong Yuejin District Pharmacy at a cost of more than $3,500. They were packaged in a bag of blister packs that contained sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
The goods were then shipped to Hong Kong’s other major international ports, including the Republic of China, Australia, Brazil, South Korea, and Japan.
Customs officers also seized the drugs, which had been labelled as “medical cannabis” in the packaging. In addition, the drugs were also seized in Hong Kong.
“There are no laws in Hong Kong in terms of importing pharmaceutical products, which is illegal and in many cases not legal,” Lough said.
